For the alleged attack inside Mack’s home, War Machine, a former mixed martial arts fighter who changed his identity from Jon Koppenhaver in 2008, was charged with 34 offenses, including attempted murder and sexual assault. In 2013, Christy Mack and War Machine met at a photo shoot. Mack was sick, so he offered to come to her hotel and look after her. He wanted to hang out with her even though she informed him they wouldn’t be having sex. They shared pizza and a lot of conversation, and they felt a strong bond.
Koppenhaver didn’t like her work, but they were a couple for a year, even living together in her Las Vegas home on two separate occasions. She was the notoriously stunning porn star who was cage-side at all of War Machine’s fights when he fought on an MMA card. However, she claims that the violence began to spill over from the cage into her personal life. At his suggestion, she quit doing movies and instead focused on photography and public appearances. But, as many domestic abuse victims have pointed out, that didn’t actually help. A sensitive friendship quickly devolved into something resembling the polar opposite.
Mack still felt a draw toward Koppenhaver after the relationship ended, restarted, and ended again. Prosecutors allege he used an old key to break into her home on Aug. 8, 2014, where she and a male friend, Corey Thomas, were sleeping the night before a tattoo convention. The prosecution claims that what followed was a jealous outburst that turned into a horrible exhibition of violence. In court documents, Koppenhaver is accused of 36 separate offenses, including attempted murder. Sadly, they made tattoos for each other, which you can see here.
Koppenhaver allegedly walked into the bedroom, switched on the light, and began punching Thomas with his fists, waking Mack and Thomas up. Thomas said that Koppenhaver repeatedly hit him and bit him in the face before putting him in a chokehold. Mack stated that Koppenhaver told him to leave the house after about 10 minutes and not to call the cops. Thomas fled the residence without calling the cops. According to the prosecution, Koppenhaver then began beating Mack. He hit her many times, knocking her out on at least one occasion, then kicked her in the side of her body.
Mack claims Koppenhaver took a knife and threatened her with it at some time. She claims she ended up naked and in the shower, though she isn’t clear if he undressed her or commanded her to do so. Koppenhaver was charged with sexual assault after she told police that he tried to rape her. Mack only got out of the house when Koppenhaver left the bedroom and went into the kitchen, according to her testimony. She suspects he went seeking for another knife after hearing metal clashing. Mack claims she dashed to a neighbor’s house naked. The neighbors did not answer the door, but they did allow her to shelter behind a wall outside while they dialed 911.
Because of the damage to her thigh, she was unable to walk for a week after the beating. Her liver had been burst as a result of punches and kicks to her body; the liver injury was so severe that physicians decided not to operate on her face because they were concerned she wouldn’t be able to endure anesthesia. She suffered 18 shattered bones, a fractured rib, a broken nose, many missing and damaged teeth, and a broken nose.
War Machine was sentenced to life in prison on June 5, 2018 for assault, attempted murder, battery with strangulation, and kidnapping, with the possibility of parole after 36 years. He is currently incarcerated in Ely State Prison. War Machine is currently engaged to Ashley Farrington, 30, whom her family reports TMZ.com was a pen pal in 2017 before taking their relationship to the next level this summer. War Machine is presently being visited by Farrington at the state prison.
